An eventful week

Monday 15th June 2009

This week’s been an emotional rollercoaster.  On Tuesday my elder brother died of the big C and I was absolutely devastated, as are all the family.  It puts the work situation into perspective somewhat.  I’m determined more than ever not to work my life away but live in the moment.

Two good pieces of news came in though this week.  The first is that we’ve been officially greenlit for A Passionate Woman!  I can’t believe it; after such a long wait, it’s finally a reality.  We’re going to be up and running again with cameras rolling, looking for directors, cast; doing what we do the best.  It’s a huge relief for everyone concerned.  And because it’s not got huge American backing, I managed to keep control of it; so it won’t be Cher on a roof in Detroit.  It’s going to be whoever Rollem and the BBC want. But certainly it’ll be somebody British and she’ll be on a roof in Yorkshire.  Hooray.

And finally, this week, I was awarded an OBE.  I got the letter which asked me if I would accept an OBE about 2 weeks ago.  I had to tick a box which said either yes or no.  Of course I ticked yes – it’s a wonderful thing to be given an award for services to drama.  I felt privileged to be even considered.  Then the day after my brother died I got a letter addressed to Kay Mellor OBE – I nearly fell over.  The highs and lows of my life are incredible, but maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be.  Maybe that’s how it is for everybody.  I don’t know.  All I do know, is at the end of a very sad week, two wonderful things have happened.
